Worcester Christmas Lights Switch On

Christmas Lights Switch-onOn Saturday 14th November 2015 the city centre Christmas lights have been officially switched on in front of the Guildhall on the High Street. Three-year-old Georgie Gibbs joined the Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Roger Knight, to switch on Worcester’s Christmas lights during a free festive family event in the city. The Worcester tot, who has spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, is hoping to raise £60,000 so she can receive pioneering medical treatment in America. The Mayor invited Georgie and mum Clare, from St John’s, to help launch Christmas in Worcester on Saturday, November 14, after hearing about her campaign on Twitter. Georgie took centre stage with the Mayor to switch on the lights just before 6pm, rounding off an afternoon of free musical entertainment with bands on the Free Radio stage from 4pm.

 

Worcester City Markets hosted a special two-day lights switch-on Christmas market in High Street on 14th & 15th November from 10am to 6.30pm to launch the city’s festive celebrations. Arrival of Father Christmas

Santa at CrownGateFather Christmas arrived at Worcester city centre and CrownGate shopping centre on Sunday 15th November 2015. Visitors and locals celebrated his arrival during his parade through Worcester city centre, which started at 12.45pm from the Guildhall in High Street to CrownGate. This was followed by story time with Father Christmas in CrownGate’s Friary Walk (near Mothercare & Superdrug), where he read the story of The Nutcracker. Plus a special guest appearance from two of Father Christmas’ reindeer in CrownGate’s Chapel Walk from 2pm, where people could meet and feed the reindeer. Santa StorytimeCome and listen to the wonderful story of The Nutcracker, told by Father Christmas and his Elf in Friary Walk at CrownGate. Meet Father Christmas in Worcester in Friary Walk (near Ryman & Mothercare) at CrownGate every Thursday to Sunday from 15th November until Christmas Eve. Free story time with Father Christmas runs on the hour every hour during these opening times.

Free Nutcracker Trail

Nutcracker TrailWander through CrownGate’s Friary Walk and Chapel Walk to find the 15 giant Nutcrackers, each with different funny moustaches. Collect your FREE Nutcracker Trail booklet from Friary Walk (by Ryman and Mothercare), which has the locations of all the Nutcrackers, plus colouring and prizes! Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre

Around 200 stalls will fill the atmospheric streets of Worcester’s historic heart with the colours, sounds and irresistible aromas of Christmas for this extra special time of year.

From sparkly jewellery and festive home decorations to traditional roast chestnuts and warming mulled wine – a wonderful range of products are waiting to be discovered within the local arts and crafts maker area, international area, festive gifts area and food court. Embrace the Christmas spirit with the sounds of joyful choir and instrumental performances, view magical dance displays and travel back through time with juggling Victorian themed stiltwalkers. Experience the fun of the Fayre as you step aboard the Victorian carousel and enjoy the ride whilst listening to the sounds of barrel organ music.

Make it an exciting, fun packed day out by combining your trip to the Fayre with a visit to Worcester’s historic attractions and exceptional range of independent boutiques and popular High Street names, or take the weight of your feet and relax in one of the city’s many welcoming cafes, pubs and restaurants.

Fayre opening ceremony

The opening ceremony of this year’s Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre will take place on Thursday 26th November. The Fayre will be declared officially open by The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Roger Knight. Departing at 5.15pm, the mayor will process from the Guildhall to The Cornmarket (in front of the galloper) where the Fayre will be officially opened. at 5.30pm be entertained by performances from the Salvation Army and Worcester Cathedral Voluntary Choir. The opening ceremony finishes at 6pm.

Winter Festival at Reindeer Court

Reindeer Court advertThis festive season Reindeer Court is enjoying a bit of a renaissance with the courtyard now being full of wonderful independent businesses. Reindeer Court’s first ‘Winter Festival’ season kicks off with the city wide Victorian Fayre from 26th to 29th November, where you will find not only a host of lovely gift ideas, but also live music on the courtyard stage.

On Thursday 3rd December, from 5-8pm, Reindeer Court will be sparkling with Christmas lights for late night shopping. Come along to get that Christmas list sorted and enjoy special offers across the court. There will also be tradition carol singing from 5pm, and you can take part in our Count the Reindeer competition to win a hamper of goodies worth over £200!

Saturday 5th December will be a very exciting day, as Rudolph and his best buddy will be paying a visit. Come along between 11-4pm for a memorable encounter with real reindeer, and a chance to have your photo taken with them!

On Saturday 12th December Reindeer Court will have the perfect festive stress diffuser in Alexander’s bar… grab your shopping buddy, or bring the family in to our Christmas Photo-booth! Props, costumes and silliness await, and you can share it all online afterwards! And don’t miss the family of roving penguins that will be paying the court a visit at 3pm!

If you like something unexpected, you must not miss the magical encounter at 2.30pm on Saturday 19th December. See live magic, and let the Reindeer Court shops perform magic on your Christmas lists too!

Throughout the festive season Reindeer Court offers a fabulous choice of Christmas shopping destinations, cafés for a bite to eat and bars to relax in when it all gets too much! Festive Events & Exhibitions at the Worcester City Museums

Enjoy Bite Sized Talks from 1pm to 1.30pm. On Tuesday 10th November the is talk is about the story of Steward’s Chemist Shop (you can also take a look inside the Chemists Shop on 3rd November and 1st December 11am – 3pm). On Tuesday 8th December the bite sized talk focusses on Great Worcestershire artists. It’s just £2 per person per talk and no booking is necessary.

Crafted for You Dilyana Evtimova 1As thoughts turn towards the festive season the annual Crafted for You exhibition opens this Saturday at Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum (Foregate Street) and is on show until 9th January 2016. Crafted for You showcases some of the best craft makers in the Midlands. A sumptuous range of jewellery, ceramics, glassware and textiles are on show and all available to purchase. There are 14 makers in this year’s show. This exhibition is the perfect opportunity to purchase an exquisite Christmas gift, or give yourself that well-earned treat!

 

Jo Dewar 2 aEveryone is welcome to the Art Gallery & Museum for the opening of the Crafted for You exhibition on Saturday 7th November, 11am – 1pm. Visitors can enjoy a festive drink, a mince pie and a leisurely browse through Crafted for You. Society of ArtistsThe 68th annual exhibition of the Worcester Society of Artists will be taking place from 28th November to 30th January. Many of the paintings and ceramics by local artists are for sale.

Visit the Christmas Delights event on Saturday 19th December from 11am to 3pm. Come and create beautiful angels, stars and baubles for your Christmas tree £2 contribution towards craft materials.

Winter-solsticeWish Upon a Star – during the hustle and bustle of the festivities, take a little time out to make and decorate a wish star to hang in our gallery or be taken home, and tag it with your New Year Wish. This free activity takes place from 21st December to 2nd January.

Join the Friends of Fort Royal Park and The Commandery to celebrate the Winter Solstice at The Commandery (Sidbury) on Tuesday 22nd December 2015 from 3pm to 5pm. Admission is free.

The Worcester City Art Gallery & Museum at Foregate Street is open Mondays to Saturdays from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Entry is free. The Balcony Cafe offers plenty of seasonal treats to warm you up and is open 10.30am – 4.15pm. Pop into Worcester for late night shopping or make it a night out. Parking at Worcester City Council car parks is free after 9pm and only £1 at selected car parks between 7pm and 9pm. If you’re visiting for the day, all day parking starts from £3.50.

Festive shoppers have been given an early Christmas gift by Worcester City Council – free parking on Thursday evenings and a great deal on Sundays too! Shoppers taking advantage of late night opening in city shops on Thursday evenings will be able to park free of charge after 6pm from Thursday 19th November up to and including 24th December. And starting on Sunday 6th December shoppers will be able to pay for two hours on Sundays and get the rest of the day free. This offer will run up to and including Sunday 20th December. Both offers apply to all council car parks with the exception of The Cornmarket from Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th November, as it will be closed on these days for the annual Victorian Christmas Fayre. Visit www.worcester.gov.uk/parking for full details and rates at individual car parks.

9.45am – 5.10pm (15min frequency, using First 910 service County Hall to Worcester Crowngate Bus Station)

The Park & Ride service does not operate on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th November.

Public Transport

Worcester city centre can be easily accessed by public transport with CrownGate bus station and Foregate Street train station being right in the heart of the city centre. Shrub Hill train station is also within 10-15 minutes walking distance from the centre.

To plan your journey, please visit the National Rail website for train travel and First Wyvern for bus information. To make your journey to Worcester more comfortable, London Midland has announced additional carriages on many of their services from Birmingham to Worcester on Sundays from 13th December 2015.
